Do you have a question about our roofing or building services?

Prolong Your Roof’s Life and Prevent Costly Repairs

Your roof is your home’s first line of defence against the elements; enduring rain, wind, hot sun and possible falling debris, not to mention the biological impediments; such as moss and algae. With all these factors and without regular attention, even the most pristine roof can quickly degrade into a costly renewal or repair down the line.

At RV Roofing & Building we provide expert roof maintenance, cleaning, moss removal and general roof repair services for both residential and business customers – throughout Dorset and surrounding local areas. Ensuring home-owners and businesses throughout the local area have the best roof protection and maintenance money can buy.

Roof Cleaning & Moss Removal

Over time, even the most pristine roofs will accumulate organic growth in the form of moss and algae, particularly in shaded or damp areas – where moss, algae and lichens thrive. While this might seem a purely cosmetic concern, the truth is it can possibly damage your roof and roofing structure.

Moss holds water like a sponge. When it grows thick across tiles and within, it can overlap, preventing drainage and thus problems like water penetration underneath the roofing layer. During cold weather this trapped moisture expands and contracts, leading to tile cracking, lifting and eventual leaks.

Our cleaning service is built around safe, long-term results. We do not use pressure washers on roofs, a practice strongly discouraged by manufacturers and Trading Standards due to the risk of tile damage, water ingress and premature wear. Instead we use a proven manual method. Every roof is carefully cleared using hand tools and brushes. Lifting and removing moss without compromising the tiles integrity. This approach preserves the protective granular surface that manufactured tiles rely on.

Once clear of visible moss, we then apply a commercial-grade biocide treatment to kill any remaining spores, algae or organic contaminants at the microscopic level. This solution continues working after application and helping to suppress regrowth over time. Where necessary we replace damaged tiles as part of the clean and always clear your guttering system to ensure full drainage. The final result is a cleaner roof, which also enhances your property’s aesthetic and functionality.

Excellent repair work and they alerted us to the bad installation of flue pipe through the roof which needed lead covering. They applied lead plate around the pipe and did a great job. Would definitely recommend.

General Roof Repairs

Even a small roofing defect can escalate quickly if ignored. That’s why RV Roofing & Building offer responsive and affordable repair solutions for all roof types, whether pitched tile and slate roofs or flat roofing systems like felt, EPDM or GRP. Our professional goal is always to address problems early and preserve your roof’s structural integrity before any problems arise.

Typical issues we attend to include cracked or slipped tiles, broken ridge and verge mortar, lead flashing damage around chimneys and valleys, minor sagging of roof timbers, and persistent leaks around roof penetrations – such as skylights, flues or vents. Every repair is carried out by our experienced Dorset roofers, who will first assess the extent of the problem before offering you a recommendation on potential works – whether that’s a repair or advice on a wider issue.

For flat roofs we often attend to repair blisters, tears, pooled water damage and compromised seams. We also work with modern membranes like EPDM and GRP, as well as traditional felt coverings, ensuring compatibility with your existing system.

In every case, our team will work to identify the root cause of the issue. We never patch over problems for short-term fixes. Where required, we’ll also advise on preventative improvements such as better ventilation, upgraded flashing or improved drainage.

All backed by our workmanship guarantee, RV Roofing and Building offer the complete roof repair and maintenance solution. Talk to us about your local roofing works today!

What Is a Biocidal Roof Treatment?

Biocidal treatment is a specialist solution used to kill off moss, algae and lichens after manual roof cleaning. Unlike bleach or detergent, a professional-grade biocide penetrates deeply into porous roof surfaces and works over time to neutralise microscopic spores that would otherwise regrow.

It’s a key step in professional moss removal and helps preserve tile integrity long after cleaning. At RV Roofing & Building, we only use premium, approved formulas to ensure your roof remains clean and protected for as long as possible.

Fascia, Soffit & Gutter Maintenance

The roofline, made up of fascia boards, soffits and guttering, plays a vital, but often, overlooked role in protecting your home from water damage. Not just for aesthetics, these components support the roof’s edges, speeds rainwater away from the building, whilst also allowing airflow into the roof space. This prevents condensation and timber rot.

Timber fascia boards are prone to rotting, especially when neglected or hidden behind leaking gutters. Once weakened, they may no longer support the guttering correctly, leading to water overflows that damage brickwork, stain render or pool around foundations. To resolve this we offer a full fascia and soffit upgrade service, using high-performance uPVC systems, that are weatherproof, maintenance-free and made to last decades.

To do this we remove the old timber structure, inspect the underlying rafter ends and replace or reinforce any compromised sections before installing the new fascia and soffit boards. The result is a clean, solid roof edge with proper ventilation and no risk of peeling paint or fungal rot.

Gutters are just as crucial. A blocked gutter may seem minor but over time it can cause considerable damage. Over-flowing water could penetrate mortar joints, soak internal walls and cause staining or mould (it also increases the risk of gutters pulling away from the structure entirely under the weight of trapped water and debris).

Why Gutter Neglect Can Lead to Internal Damp

Blocked or leaking gutters don’t just affect the outside of your home, they can allow water to saturate external walls. Making its way through brickwork and mortar into your internal cavity.

Over time this dampness can damage plaster, flooring and electrical systems. In some cases, mould and rot may even begin to form inside. Regular gutter cleaning is a simple, affordable way to prevent these costly and invasive issues before they arise.

Dorset Roof Cleaning Services

We take a hands-on approach to gutter care. Rather than using vacuum systems or brushes on poles, we clean gutters manually to ensure every section is fully cleared and inspected. Downpipes are flushed through, joints are checked for leaks and brackets are realigned if sagging is detected. The team will also notify you of any vulnerabilities in the system and offer recommendations for repair or replacement (if needed).

Many clients combine gutter cleaning with moss removal or roof inspections as part of an annual maintenance plan. This pro-active approach will dramatically reduce the chance of water-related issues along your roofline.

Ongoing Support & Scheduled Maintenance

We don’t just offer one-off fixes we’re here to help maintain your roof for years to come. Many of our clients opt for annual or bi-annual check-ups, especially before winter or after severe storms. This service includes a full visual inspection of the roof surface, flashing points, gutters, roofline junctions and visible structural elements, as well as a lovely report.

The scheduled maintenance is designed to identify small defects early and give advice on the most efficient solution, saving you time and money in the long-run. Case Study: Roof Cleaning, Repairs & Roofline Upgrade – Wimborne, Dorset

Client: Mr & Mrs. Langford
Location: Wimborne, Dorset
Property Type: 1930s Detached Home

Moss removal, tile replacement, uPVC fascia & guttering upgrade

Overview

The Langfords contacted RV Roofing & Building after noticing damp patches forming on their first-floor ceiling and green moss streaks visibly spreading across their roof tiles. Although the roof was structurally sound and only 20-years old, it hadn’t received any maintenance since installation. Their main concerns were blocked gutters, visible moss and the deterioration of original timber fascia boards that were no longer supporting the guttering properly.

After a full on-site assessment our team proposed a three-part service; a complete manual moss removal and biocide treatment, targeted tile repairs and lastly a full replacement of the roofline using low-maintenance uPVC.

Works

We began by erecting safe access scaffolding to reach the roofline safely. The team manually removed heavy moss build-up from the tiles using specialist hand tools and ensuring no surface damage occurred. Once cleared, we applied a high-strength fungicidal biocide treatment to kill any remaining spores and help prevent regrowth. The roof was then left to dry naturally overnight.

During cleaning we identified and replaced 12 cracked tiles and secured several loose ridge tiles that had begun to shift due to weather exposure. Damaged felt at the verge was also repaired to restore the edge protection of the tiled slope.

Deteriorated timber fascia and soffits were the next problem. The boards were removed to reveal minor rafter end decay, which was treated and repaired before fitting the new uPVC fascia and soffit system. Matching half-round black guttering and downpipes were installed, improving both performance and visual appeal.

Result

The completed works delivered immediate benefits. The roof was visibly brighter and more uniform – with no remaining moss or stains. Gutter functionality was fully restored and the property’s perimeter is now protected with a reliable and modern roofline system.

Mr. and Mrs. Langford noted how impressed they were with the team’s professionalism and attention to detail. They were particularly relieved to see the roof restored without the need for full replacement and have since arranged for scheduled gutter checks going forward.

Client Feedback

“We’re thrilled with the results. The house looks ten years younger, and we finally feel confident heading into winter without worrying about leaks or blocked gutters. RV Roofing made the whole process stress-free and we’d highly recommend them to anyone needing honest roofing advice.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Regular roof maintenance is essential for protecting your property and avoiding costly future costs. Most residential roofs benefit from an annual inspection, ideally carried out before or after winter. In areas with heavy tree cover or older tile systems, twice-yearly checks are often advised. These inspections help catch small problems like slipped tiles, moss growth or blocked gutters - before they turn into more serious concerns.

Moss is far more than a cosmetic issue. It holds moisture against the roofs surface, which can accelerate the breakdown of tiles and lead to cracks during freeze-thaw cycles. Moss can also work its way underneath the tiles causing them to lift slightly and allowing rainwater to penetrate below. Also as moss breaks free and falls free and into the guttering, it can make blockages, this prevents proper drainage and creates overflow problems. Over time, unchecked moss growth can shorten the life of your roof significantly.

While it might seem like a quick solution, pressure washing is not recommended for tiled roofs. The high-pressure water can remove the protective granular layer from concrete tiles reducing their lifespan and making them more porous. It can also force water beneath the tiles, potentially leading to leaks and damp issues inside your loft space. Many roof tile manufacturers and the UK’s Trading Standards body advise against pressure washing. At RV Roofing, we rely on safe manual moss removal and targeted biocide treatment. A process that is both effective and protective of your roofing surface.

In many cases isolated problems can be solved with a simple repair. A few slipped tiles, a patch of faulty flashing or a minor gutter leak don’t warrant a full re-roof. However, if your roof is over 25-years old and you’re experiencing repeated leaks or a sagging roofline, it may be more economical to invest in a full re-roof. To ascertain the correct route we always carry out a detailed inspection before deciding on the best solution and we’ll also explain your options clearly before any work begins.

RV Roofing and Building carry out all common roofing repairs including tile and slate replacement, leadwork resealing, ridge and verge mortar re-pointing, flashing replacement around chimneys or skylights, felt patching on flat roofs and sagging gutter or fascia repairs, amongst other common roof maintenance issues.

This includes; fixing leaks, wind damage, and issues caused by ageing materials. Every job we undertake is handled by our professional team using proven repair methods and high-quality materials.

Gutter cleaning is a crucial but often overlooked part of roof maintenance. When we carry out this service, we access the guttering directly using ladders or scaffold, depending on height and safety requirements. Then we remove all visible moss, leaves and debris by hand, making sure to flush the downpipes and ensuring they are completely clear.

We can also inspect the fixings and joints for signs of damage or sagging and report any necessary repairs. Unlike some companies, we don’t rely on vacuum poles. Our method is hands-on, thorough and ensures nothing is missed.

Over time timber fascia boards become vulnerable to moisture penetration, especially if paint finishes deteriorate or if leaking gutters allow rainwater to run along the wood. This leads to rot, weakening the boards and sometimes the rafter ends behind them. When this happens the boards can no longer support guttering properly - leading to sagging, detachment or further leaks.

Replacing them with uPVC fascia and soffits offers a long-term, maintenance-free solution that resists weathering, won’t rot and looks clean and modern for decades.

uPVC is now the preferred choice for most homeowners because it offers several advantages over traditional timber. It doesn’t need painting or sealing, is highly resistant to water and UV damage, and has a long life expectancy. Once installed, uPVC fascia, soffits and guttering require little more than the occasional clean. They also come in a range of colours and styles, making it easier to match your property’s aesthetics. For clients who want a traditional appearance but with modern reliability, woodgrain-effect uPVC is also available.

Costs vary depending on the size of the property, the scope of work, and the materials involved. Simple moss removal or gutter cleaning can start from a few hundred pounds, while more complex repairs or full roofline upgrades will be priced accordingly.

We provide a free and no-obligation quote after assessing the condition of your roof and will always explain pricing clearly. In many cases, small preventative works can save you thousands compared to dealing with major water damage or full roof replacements later on.

Yes we can tailor maintenance schedules to suit your property and needs. Whether it’s annual inspections, seasonal gutter cleans or scheduled moss control, we’re happy to create a plan that gives you long-term peace of mind.

Many clients find that regular attention to their roof prevents larger issues, improves drainage and keeps it looking aesthetically pleasing.
